I don’t want to have to care so much and work so hard, and then fight them for intelligent reasoning, and just because they’re calling the shots they… You know, I didn’t work for three months on the accent and all the adjustments and go to Russia just so I could end up on the floor.” Rourke then went into detail on how much preparation and creativity he felt he wasted on the role, “If they want to make mindless comic book movies, then I don’t want to be a part of that.
“Unfortunately, the at Marvel just wanted a one-dimensional bad guy, so most of the performance ended up the floor.” And they allowed me to do that,” he continued. “You know, I explained to Justin Theroux, to the writer, and to Favreau that I wanted to bring some other layers and colors, not just make this Russian a complete murderous revenging bad guy. Apparently even Rourke thought his role was lame, and in a recent interview he did with Crave Online, the actor discussed Marvel’s interference with the production. Even though he was the film’s main baddie, Vanko never rose above clichés as his personality was completely one-dimensional and boring.
One of the problems with the movie was the underdeveloped character of Ivan Vanko, aka Whiplash, played by Mickey Rourke. Unfortunately, a flat script and an overcrowded supporting cast made Iron Man 2 look rusty in comparison to the brilliant original.
So when Iron Man 2 came out in 2010, fans were basically foaming at the mouth in anticipation of Ol’ Shellhead’s second adventure. Mickey Rourke is shown at the Critics Choice Awards on 1/8/08.When Iron Man was released in 2008, it was hailed as one of the most sophisticated and visually striking superhero movies to ever grace the big screen. The movie also stars Jason Satham, Stallone, Jet Li, and Forest Whitaker, and sounds like exactly the kind of B movie Rourke’s agent will be turning down after Iron Man. I’m not so sure, however, about the Stallone film The Expendables. is of course returning as Tony Stark, Gwenyth Paltrow will continue as Pepper Potts, and Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard as Rhodey. Although the Iron Man franchise is not as dark and therefore not as demanding as, say, The Dark Knight, the first film held together well with wise casting choices. If he does well as Whiplash/ Crimson Dynamo, he’ll also prove that he has star power. The Wrestler, a gritty film, was done by Darren Aronofsky ( Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Pi), and proved that he has the chops to take on heavy roles. Whatever his character’s name, Iron Man seems like a good choice for Rourke. Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Script is still being written by Justin Theroux, and Marvel has been trying to keep a wrap on details leaking out to fanboys.Īlthough it seems to be clear that he will be playing a tattooed Russian bad guy, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter can’t agree on the name of his character. He’s considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor. Rourke is in discussions to play the Crimson Dynamo, a heavily tattooed Russian arms dealer. In addition to filming 13 and the Sylvester Stallone film The Expendables, Rourke is attempting to cash in on a blockbuster franchise by playing a villain in Iron Man 2. With his recent film The Wrestler appearing on lists of the top movies of 2008, >, it’s no surprise that Mickey Rourke’s next career move will be closely watched.
